History of Hampton Roads Independent Baptist Church (HRIBC)
Beginning with the six members of the Sebrell family, Hampton Roads Independent Baptist Church (HRIBC) was organized May 6, 2001 with 59 charter members. The HRIBC is an affiliate of Crossroads Baptist Church and its church-planting ministry known as the Conference on Evangelizing Black America (COEBA) based in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia.
Hampton Roads Independent Baptist Church (HRIBC) which now meets at 1999 W. Pembroke Avenue, Hampton, Virginia held it's first service April 5, 1998 in the Sebrell's home in Hampton, Virginia with 15 attendance. The church was started by Roger E. Sebrell and his wife, Francine, and their four children, Solomon, Benjamin, Leah, and Jonathan. The family was sent out by Dr. Louis Baldwin and the Crossroads Baptist Church in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia to plant a New Testament church in the Hampton Roads community.
The following week, and for the next six months, services of HRIBC were held in the facilities of Victory Baptist Church located at 445 Shelton Road, Hampton, Virginia. On September 20, 1998, the church rented meeting space at the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Center located at 1 Singleton Drive, Hampton, Virginia. By the end of 1998, the church had grown to 21 members and was supporting sehttp://fundamentaltop500.com/ft500.php3?sid=4ven missionary families and two missions agencies. At the end of 1999, the membership had increased to 45 members, and up to 63 members by the end of 2000.
On November 23, 2004, HRIBC purchased a small office building to use as a church operational facility. After a year of submissions and resubmissions of renovation drawings, we received final renovation approval from the city of Hampton on November 15, 2005. From January 2006 until Septemer 2006 we were in the process of renovating the building. We moved into the building and held our first service on September 17, 2006. Our membership increased from 86 to 100 in the first couple of months of occupying the new facility.
HRIBC is a fundamental, independent, Baptist church with a heart for world evangelization and an emphasis on evangelizing Black America. Even though our emphasis is Black America, we simultaneously recognize our responsibility and maintain God's focus on "all nations." Our purpose is to glorify God by fulfilling both the Great Commandment and the Great Commission (Matt. 22:37-40; 28:19-20). We seek to produce spiritually maturing Christians for the purpose of ministering to others. Our objectives are to evangelize sinners, baptize saints, catechize servants and mobilize soldiers in the work of the ministry.
From its inception, HRIBC has been involved in supporting evangelists/missionaries, church-planters, and church-planting agencies. We praise the Lord for His marvelous work!
